Keep Going! Here's Help to Stick with New Year's Resolutions

Author: Kaitlyn Kinsey, National Center for Telehealth & Technology

Setting New Year’s resolutions is easy. Keeping them is the hard part.

By now, the January rush at your local gym may be thinning out, and those salad-a-day diets may now include a few fast-food runs. Unhealthy ways to cope with stress — like getting angry, shutting down or having a drink — are starting to resurface. You might be thinking: Will my goals for healthy living give way to my old bad habits?

Fortunately, there’s help. The National Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2) offers a wide range of mobile apps and online resources for making 2017 your healthiest year yet.

To reduce stress and focus on wellness:

  • Breathe2Relax Mobile App: Use this portable stress-management tool to learn breathing exercises to help you stay calm and cope with anxiety at work and home.
  • Virtual Hope Box Mobile App: Create a positive space on your mobile phone by adding personalized audio messages, quotes, photos, songs, coping statements and more for encouragement on your wellness journey.

To stay smoke-free:

  • Resilience Assessment: Take this anonymous questionnaire that tests the resilience skills you need to break a habit. There are also resources to help you stop smoking for good.
  • Mindfulness Coach Mobile App: Experiment with nine forms of mindfulness meditation to find a practice that works best for you as you deal with the mental effects of tobacco withdrawal.
  • Stay Quit Coach Mobile App: Cope with the urge to smoke through tips, tools and activities.

To monitor your drinking:

  • Personal Stories: Watch service members’ testimonials about realizing the danger of excess substance use in their own lives and the importance of treatment. Speaking from their own experience, they explain firsthand how recovery is possible.

To track your progress:

  • T2 Mood Tracker Mobile App: Read this blog post by Dr. Julie Kinn, deputy director of the T2 Mobile Health Program, about achieving your New Year’s resolutions using the T2 Mood Tracker app. The app helps you track emotions and create customized scales to measure progress toward your goals, with results displayed in easy-to-understand graphs.

Use these resources to enhance your wellbeing and start the year off strong, and monitor your progress to stay on track. You can do it! With your T2 tools in place, you can stay resilient and keep your New Year’s goals going strong through February and beyond.
