Get Involved During Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so if you or someone you know is going through a tough time, it’s a great opportunity to seek helpful resources or be supportive. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health inside and outside military communities. Service members, veterans and their families often face unique challenges to mental health, such as PCSing, coming home from a deployment or transitioning to civilian life.

Check out the following three programs to learn more about mental health challenges and solutions — and then connect with someone to get on a healthier path and join with others to spread the word!

  • #AskDCoE. Do you have questions about mental health? Are you a service member or veteran, know someone who is, or work as a health care provider? Now’s your chance to ask the experts. During the month of May, staff at the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE) will answer questions about mental health on social media. Here’s how you can participate:
    • Facebook: Post a question to DCoE’s wall or comment with your question on a related post, and get the answers you need.
    • Twitter: Tweet @DCoEPage with your question, and be sure to include #AskDCoE to learn more about mental health.
  • Use Your Voice. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) encourages starting a positive conversation this month about veterans’ mental health using the message: “Use your voice.” Visit the Make the Connection website to learn more about ways you can use your voice. You also can find social media posts to share with your community and tips for starting the conversation with a veteran in your life.
  • Making Each Day Count. Each year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) designates a week in May as National Prevention Week. This year, it’s May 14–20, and the theme is “Making Each Day Count.” Communities across the country will come together that week to raise awareness about the importance of substance-abuse prevention and mental health.
